Welcome to the Marshalton Triathlon

For 48 years, the first Sunday of October has been known as Marshalton Triathlon day. On this day individuals, families and teams gather at the Marshalton Inn and Four Dogs Tavern, located in the quaint village of Marshallton to participate in this premier community sporting event.

First run in 1973, the race is considered one of the longest running triathlons in the country. The race course travels through scenic Chester County and provides all levels of challenge for participants.

The Marshalton Triathlon starts and finishes at the Marshalton Inn (1302 West Strasburg Rd, West Chester, PA 19382), a short drive from Philadelphia and Delaware.

Update - The 2022 Marshalton Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, October 2, 2022. Stay tuned for registration information!

Leg 1 - Pedal
2.3 Mile Downhill Race to the Brandywine

The Triathlon starts with the Pedal Leg, located in front of the West Bradford Fire Company firehouse. This bicycle leg meanders, with a brief exhilarating downhill, for the next 2.3 miles down to the Northbrook Canoe Company.

Leg 2 - Paddle
2.3 Mile Two Person Canoe Race on the Brandywine

The crew at Northbrook Canoe Company will assist you into a canoe as the exhilarating Paddle Leg begins. The water level of the Brandywine determines the challenge of the next 2.3 miles and the pros from Northbrook Canoe Company are on hand to assist the whole way.

Leg 3 - Pace
2.4 Mile Fast Walk Through the Back Trails of Chester County

Now onshore, participants walk briskly for the Pace Leg. The course starts on paved surface that leads to a lush forest path. Warning! Race marshals will disqualify runners.

Leg 4 - Pedal
2.3 Mile Return to the Finish Line at The Inn

Everyone is back on their bicycles and pushing hard for the finish line now. The challenge of this final leg is the uphill on Northbrook Road, with the firehouse finish line just around the corner. Finishers then join family and friends for a well-deserved pat on the back and refreshments and entertainment at the Triathlon Festival. Congratulations!

West Bradford Fire Company

Founded in 1953, West Bradford Fire Company (WBFC) is an all-volunteer crew dedicated to rescue and fire prevention education in West Bradford, East Bradford and Newlin Townships. The approximate 45 member crew responds to nearly 400 incidents per year. Since 1976, WBFC has been the primary benefactor of the Marshalton Triathlon proceeds. These proceeds help defray operational costs and provide financial assistance to members who suffer misfortunes as a result of volunteering. The Marshalton Triathlon is the primary fundraising effort for the West Bradford Fire Company.  (Learn more)

Marshallton Conservation Trust

Over the last several years the Marshallton Conservation Trust has played a much more active role in the organization and promotion of the Triathlon. This has helped insure the continuation of the event. MCT was formed in 2009 by a group of concerned citizens to promote the preservation and improvement of the Marshallton community.

Among its goals is to steward and encourage recognition of the village’s history and culture. It is also part of their mission to create a local community forum to address issues of mutual concern and to protect and improve the quality of life, safety, health and environment of the Marshallton community.

Importantly, MCT continues to actively support the efforts of West Bradford Township to conserve the picturesque and historically important rural landscapes that surround the village and make the Triathlon possible. To that end, the Marshallton Conservation Trust has typically designated proceeds it receives from the Triathlon to support open space endeavors.  (Learn more)
